Q-Ride

Q:

Which course should I do?

If you have received your L’s before October 1, 2016 and have never ridden before, I recommend doing the Pre-Learner Q-Ride to learn the basics of how to ride. After the Pre-Learner Q-Ride you can then do a couple of one hour sessions on the road to gain some road experience before enrolling in the RE Q-Ride. After the RE Q-Ride you obtain your restricted (RE) motorcycle licence, allowing you to ride a LAMS approved bike unsupervised.

If you received your L’s before October 1, 2016 and know the basics of riding. I recommend completing a couple of one hour sessions on the road first and then enrolling in the RE Q-Ride. After the RE Q-Ride you obtain your restricted (RE) motorcycle licence, allowing you to ride a LAMS approved bike unsupervised.

If you received your L’s before October 1, 2016 and have a fair bit of experience riding (for example, dirt bike riding), I recommend enrolling in the RE Q-Ride. After the RE Q-Ride you obtain your restricted (RE) motorcycle licence, allowing you to ride a LAMS approved bike unsupervised.

If you have held your restricted (RE) licence for the minimum time frame and want to upgrade, enrol in the unrestricted (R) Q-ride. If you obtained your RE licence before 1 October 2016, the minimum waiting period is 1 year, otherwise, it is 2 years.
Q:

If I don’t have my learners but know how to ride, do I have to complete the Pre-Learner Q- Ride?

Yes, you have to complete the Pre-Learner Q-Ride to obtain your L’s. Note: If you live outside a 100km radius of a Q-Ride training area, you may choose to apply for an exemption from completing the course, however if you are exempt from the course you will need to hold your RE learner licence for at least 1 year.
Q:

Is the a time frame I have to complete the Pre Learner course?

Yes, you must complete the training within 30 days of commencing it. If you can’t complete it in this period you will be assesses as not competent.
Q:

How long do I have to hold my L’s for?

If you received your L’s before October 1, 2016, there is no minimum time frame. Once you are ready, you can enrol in the RE Q Ride.

If you received your L’s after October 1, 2016, completed the Pre-Learner Q-Ride, you can enrol after 3 months.
Q:

What is the Pre-Learner Q Ride?

As of 1 October 2016, if you don’t have your L’s you will be required to complete this course before obtaining them. The course is deisgned to help learners gain basic riding knowledge in a safe environment before riding on the road. It is designed for people who have had no riding experience. The course is competency bases, with each competency element assessed as competent or not yet competent; participants will only successfully complete the course if they demonstrate all competencies. (Department of Transport and Main Roads, Pre-Learner Class Q-Ride Training Manual, 1 August 2016). Sunshine coast motorcycle school run this course on over a weekend, 6 hrs on Saturday and 6hrs on Sunday. Both days must be completed.
Q:

What is the RE Q-Ride?

This course is designed to help learner riders further develop their riding knowledge and motorcycle handling skills. The objectives of this course are to ensure learner riders have the knowledge and skills to ride unaccompanied. The course is deisgned for riders who have completed the pre-learner course and have some on-road riding experience. If you received your L’s before october 1 2016, you can enrol in this course if you have had some on road experience. (Department of Transport and Main Roads, R Class Q-Ride Training Manual, 1 August 2016).
Q:

What is the R Q Ride?

This course is designed to help riders reinforce their riding knowledge and skills and further develop risk management strategies. The objectives of this course are to enhance and reinforce rider’s knowledge and skills. The course is designed for riders who have completed their pre-learner and restricted license courses and have significant on-road riding experience. (Department of Transport and Main Roads, R Class Q-Ride Training Manual, 1 August 2016).
Q:

When can I go for my licence to ride any bike I want?

If you obtained your RE licence before October 1, 2016 you are eligible to enrol in the R-Q Ride 1 year after you lodged your certificate with the Department of Transport and Main Roads. After you complete the R Q Ride, you can then ride an unrestricted motorbike. If you obtained your RE licence after October 1, 2016, you are eligible to enrol in the R Q Ride 2 years after you were deemed competent for the RE licence. After you complete the R Q Ride, you can then ride an unrestricted motorbike.
Q:

How will I be assessed?

Q-Ride is a competency based system which means that only a rider who has demonstrated competency in all elements of the course will get a licence. Enrolling in a Q-Ride course does not guarantee a motorcycle licence. It is reasonable to expect that some riders will not be competent and therefore not receive a licence at the end of a course.

We all learn at different rates and the nature of competency based training and assessment accommodates this well. The time it takes a student to complete the various tasks competently will vary based on the learner rider’s knowledge, skill and experience. If a student does not achieve ALL of the required competency standards in a reasonable time it doesn’t mean they have failed. All it means is that further training will be required to get the student to the appropriate level of competency for the elements that they are struggling with. Some additional costs may be associated with this at the normal 1 on 1 hourly rate.

If you are not successful in all modules at the end of the Q-Ride, you can:
  • Participate in the complete course again at a 50% discount;
  • Organise some one on one lessons;
  • Do some more practice, and return to be assessed as the hourly rate.
Once you reach a prescribed level of competency for the criteria you are issued with a competency declaration certificate (valid for 12 months).  This may be electronic, in which case, there will be no need to visit a QLD Transport Customer service centre, you will automatically be issued with either an R or RE licence.  If you are issued with a paper version of the competency declaration, you will need to visit a QLD Transport Customer service centre.

If you complete the Pre-Learner Q-Ride you will still be required to complete the Transport and Main Roads theory questions, available online or at a Customer service centre before you will be issued with our Learners.
Q:

Does Q-Ride go ahead in the rain

Yes. Unless it is dangerous weather (eg, a cyclone or severe storm), the Q-Ride will go ahead.

    Q:

How many lessons will I need?

There is no definite answer to this question. Everybody learns differently. Below will give you an indication:

  • Remember, unless you obtained your learners (L's) before 1 October 2016, you will need to complete the Pre-Learner Q-Ride. This will probably eliminate the need for 7-10 lessons. You may just require a couple of lessons after the Pre-Learner to gain confidence on the road.
  • If you have never ridden a motorbike before I would recommend the Pre-Learner Q-Ride, even if you have your L's, and then a few lessons. You are welcome however, to learn via one on one lessons, for some people this is easier because they can't attend the Pre-Learner on the weekend. If that is the case, you will need anywhere from 5 lessons to 15, before attempting the Q-Ride course.
  • If you have ridden dirt bikes for many years you can probably complete the RE Q-ride course with no lessons. Before we ride on the road you will be required to be assessed as competent during a simulated ride in an off road area. If you are not yet competent, you won't be able to complete the road ride component of the course. If you are in doubt, I would recommend one or two, one hour group sessions first.
  • If you have ridden scooters in Bali that are automatic, already have your L's, you will need at least 2 lessons before attempting the Q-Ride course.
  • This is however, only an indication. I have seen some people who have never ridden before be a very competent rider after 1 lesson. I have seen others take 10 lessons. After the first lesson I can provide you with more of an indication many lessons you will require.

    Q:

How do I choose a helmet?

There is some great information at this website. http://www.crash.org.au It's not always how much you spend. This site has safety tested helmets, similar to the car crash test and then given the helmets ratings.
